| | KMS Bi-Weekly Communication Dear KMS Parents, Students, and Staff,
We’ve had another fantastic two weeks at KMS! Tonight at 5:30 PM, our seventh and eighth grade girls' soccer teams will compete in the silver bracket championship at Wilson Stadium, while our volleyball teams will participate in the CVC tournament this Saturday. It’s hard to believe that the first nine weeks of the school year are coming to an end soon. Quarterly benchmark assessments will be taking place this week and next, with the last day of the quarter on October 10.
Starting tomorrow, October 1, we will kick off our first wellness challenge: Hydration Month. We encourage all students and staff to aim for at least six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily while reducing sugary drink consumption. Students who wish to participate can track their daily intake during their grade-level advisory and at the end of the month they will be rewarded for their efforts. This Wednesday, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM, we will host our first set of Parent-Teacher Conferences. Mr. Cosimi sent out the sign-up link for in-person conferences last week. In mid-November, we will have another round of conferences, which will include both virtual and in-person options throughout the school day.
One of our KMS building goals is to ensure that our students regularly attend school, aligning with the State of Ohio's initiative for all students to attend no less than 91% of the time. We will continue to share literature and visuals highlighting the importance of school attendance for both academic success and social-emotional growth. Additionally, we will provide resources to help your child navigate the challenges they may face, which can create barriers to achieving this goal.
We are excited to announce that the school dance is officially scheduled for Friday, October 25, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. I will send out a SignUpGenius link for snacks and beverages soon, and we greatly appreciate all donations. The cost of the dance is $10, and Student Council will sell presale tickets during lunch and at the door on the night of the event. Please note that full face masks are prohibited, but face paint is okay.
On October 16, our seventh and eighth grade classes will travel to Andrew Osborne Academy to hear an informational speech by Chris Herren. Below is the parent letter I will send out next week to all 7th and 8th grade parents. Please feel free to look it over now and respond back with any questions you may have.
Thank you for your continued support, and here’s to a great week ahead!

| | | | | | | | Herren Talks - 7th and 8th grade Fieldtrip - 10/16/24 at Andrew Osborne AcademyDear 7th and 8th Grade Parents or Guardians,
We are excited to inform you that Chris Herren, former professional basketball player, author, and wellness speaker, will be speaking to our 7th and 8th grade students on Wednesday, October 16, at Andrews Osborne Academy. We encourage you to have a conversation with your student following this impactful assembly.
Chris Herren was a high school All-American basketball star from Fall River, Massachusetts, who went on to have a career in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets and the Boston Celtics. On the outside, he was living every high school athlete's dream, but the overwhelming pressure and expectations that come with small-town fame took a heavy toll on his inner world. Like many teenagers, Chris turned to alcohol to cope with his intense emotions. This led to the use of other substances and ultimately resulted in a substance use disorder that ended his basketball career.
Chris’s journey was documented in the ESPN FILMS 30 for 30 film, UnGuarded, which aired in 2011. It captures his story and his path to recovery. In 2019, he teamed up with filmmaker Jonathan Hock again to create The First Day, which focuses on the lessons Chris learned during his recovery and his commitment to sharing his story with young people.
After years of speaking in schools across the country, Chris believes it is crucial to discuss what leads to the first day of substance use rather than only focusing on the consequences of addiction. By doing so, he helps students learn healthier ways to cope with their stressors, encourages compassion for peers who may be struggling, and emphasizes that help is available for those in need.
The film showcases Chris's powerful storytelling ability. By candidly sharing his vulnerabilities and the hard lessons he has learned, he forges profound connections with students, who, in turn, share their own stories of struggle and strength.
Following the assembly, your student may have questions or want to talk about the presentation. To help facilitate these conversations, we recommend exploring resources from the Partnership to End Addiction and the Herren Project. These national organizations offer free programs designed to support families in preventing and addressing substance use. They provide valuable information on youth substance use, the risks of addiction, and guidance on how to engage in positive, productive conversations with your child about these issues. Additionally, they offer support for families concerned about their child's substance use behaviors.

| | | | Kirtland Academic AcademyThe idea for KAA came out of a series of discussions the Building Leadership Team had regarding our desire to help students who need a little assistance every so often, while also trying to hold students with high amounts of missing work accountable. Missing work can have such a profoundly negative impact on student learning and success within the classroom and we want to provide something that can help. We believe that this program is a tremendous opportunity for kids who need help getting back on track, while also supporting students that just need a bit of assistance every now and again.
All KMS students are welcome at KAA. The academic team - including teachers, parents, and administrators - has the discretion to make this program mandatory for students with excessive missing work which negatively impacts student learning and success within the classroom.
In many ways, KAA is homework help, tutoring, and general academic assistance for any KMS student in attendance. KMS students do not need to sign up for KAA. They simply need to show up with things they want to work on, sign in, and get the help they need. We are confident that this process will help these students find great success.
