Transportation Update
January 13, 2023
Kirtland Local Schools

Hello Kirtland Schools Families,

We are off to a great start in the 2023!  The News-Herald recently highlighted many of the positives that we have going on throughout the district this school year: NH Article

There has been a lot of excitement on the second floor at KHS as Ms. Ardo and our high school students have been using our newly renovated science lab.  The space is set up to allow students to have hands-on learning while utilizing technology to enhance their learning experience. Here is a link to pictures of the prior and current lab: Lab Photos

The Kirtland Local Schools will be hosting a presentation on human trafficking for adults only on January 26th at 7:00 pm in Hornet Hall.  I was on a Zoom call yesterday with other superintendents and the FBI. The FBI stated that “the threat is real” in our area for human trafficking, sextortion and financial sextortion.  Just this school year, a 17 year old high school student at Streetsboro took his own life after being involved in a sextortion situation. Here is the Human Trafficking Adult Presentation for you to look at ahead of time. We will also have a presentation for all high school students on January 27th during the school day. More information on the high school presentation will be coming out from Mr. Amstutz. Here is also a link to some social media safety tips for parents to help protect your child: tips

I want to make you all aware that we are continuing to pursue hiring new bus drivers to fill our vacancies but have not had any luck.  We will continue to actively recruit drivers as we work through this local and national issue. I want to emphasize that our transportation department has been working extremely hard to utilize the staff we have to transport our students to and from school. If you do see your child’s drivers, please be sure to thank them for their dedication and patience as they navigate a variety of changes and challenges.  We are fortunate to have such a caring transportation staff at the Kirtland Local Schools!

We unfortunately are losing two more drivers on Tuesday as they have pursued employment in other career fields.  This leaves the district down three drivers compared to the start of school. Despite our best efforts, we have concerns that there may be times that we will struggle to transport all students. We anticipate that there may be times that you will be asked to transport your child to school.  Please know that this is our absolute last resort.  If this situation does take place, we will communicate directly with only the families that are directly impacted. There will be an automated call and text  sent out to these families as soon as we are made aware of the situation. If you are asked to drop off or pick up your child, here is a reminder of the starting  and ending times at the buildings:

  • Doors open at 8:25 am and school starts at 8:30 am

  • School ends at 3:30 pm

  • M, T, W, F 7:25  Door open and classes start at 7:30 am/ Th 8:57

  • School ends at 2:37

If you cannot transport your child to school, please call the school office and the student will be excused from school. We understand that this may create an inconvenience to the families involved and appreciate your patience as we work through this challenge.

If you know of anyone looking for employment, we have full time bus driver, custodian positions available. We also have part time aide positions for the high and middle school. So, if you know of someone interested, please have him or her apply on our website at

Thanks for your support,

Chad VanArnhem, Superintendent
