Class of 2021 Graduation / Prom Information

Senior Parents and Students,

I hope everyone has enjoyed all the great weather - summer-like days.  Here is the most up-to-date information with 2021 Commencement and Senior Only Prom.

2021 Graduation

We have finalized the graduation venue for our 2021 senior class.  Commencement will be June 6th at 3 pm.  Our 2021 graduation ceremony will be held at the Mentor High School Fine Arts Center.  The venue, time, and place have been confirmed so set your plans accordingly.

  • Graduation Information
    • We will continue to communicate safety protocols and policies as we near graduation.

    • We are still finalizing how many guests each senior will be permitted to bring to the Commencement.  We will base the number per student on indoor safety regulations.  Students will be able to bring a minimum of 2 guests at this time but could be more depending on 25% capacity of the max capacity.  I will have more specific numbers, hopefully in my next communication.
      • A check-in process will be in place prior to the ceremony.

    • Baccalaureate has NOT been confirmed - and might not happen this year due to restrictions.

    • PTA will auction 2 sets of reserve seating for the Commencement Ceremony.  These reserved seats will be for 2 different families.  (it is nice to know that you will not need to find seating when you arrive at the Mentor Fine Arts Center.

    • The 2021 Commencement Ceremony of our seniors will also be live-streamed for family and friends.

Prom - May 7th

The 2021 Senior Only Prom is inching closer and closer.  We are still in a need of volunteers for AFTER PROM.  Please contact Michelle Cramp at [email protected] or Monica Loncar at [email protected] for donations and volunteer opportunities.

Issue 1 on the Ballot

Issue 1, which will appear on the May 4 ballot,  will renew our existing 1.10 mill Permanent Improvement (PI) levy and add 0.95 mills while continuing to fund the ongoing repair and maintenance of school district facilities.

The current PI levy was passed 25 years ago and generates the same $250,000 per year as it did when originally passed.  Currently, necessary facility improvements and repairs cost up to $350,000 each year, requiring the District to forego or defer maintenance projects every year.

Some examples of challenges that can be addressed with Issue 1 funds:

  • Enhancements to a high school science lab that is poorly laid out, have Bunsen burners without gas, and leaking sinks that are too small for proper use.

  • Upgrades to furniture and carpet in the K-3rd grade classrooms to allow for changing educational formats.

  • Technology improvements allow teachers to provide personalized instruction and to prepare students for future digital demands.

  • Enhanced surveillance systems and security.

  • Renovate our stadium to be better utilized by the school and community.  Improvements include installing turf, better lighting, resurfacing the track, and providing handicap accessibility in the bleachers.  The field will be widened to a regulation width so soccer can use it.  It will be used for baseball, softball, lacrosse, and for elementary recess if the grass is muddy. The marching band can also use it regularly and not worry about wearing out spots on the field.

Issue 1 funds would allow the district to address these issues along with other critical items in our capital improvement plan. It would add $2.75/month per $100,000 of your property value.

Our district is very proud to earn the State Auditor’s “Taxpayer Hero” award for fiscal responsibility, but facility needs cannot be addressed through wise fiscal management alone.
