Change to Remote Learning

Hello Kirtland Families,

Our COVID-19 numbers have continued to increase at a concerning rate. I have received notice in the last few hours that we have had four staff test positive and more are going to get tested.  This has been across all three buildings.  There have also been several more students that have tested positive over the weeknd.

With the concern of transmission that is taking place, I have been in consultation with Ron Graham, the Lake County General Health District Commissioner.  Based on the numbers and continued transmision, he has recommended that our district go completely remote for at least the next 10 days.  So, all three buildings will begin the remote learning model from January 25-February 2 and return on February 3rd in a model to be determined through consultation with the health department.

Here is what Ron Graham has stated: “I have reviewed the information you have sent along with our information at the Health District and it appears that you have numerous, seemingly unrelated, cases at the moment but we have a concern that a significant outbreak could occur given a sizable increase in COVID-19 positive cases around the Kirtland area. As such, we are recommending that that Kirtland School District strongly consider a 10 day pause on sports/athletics and implement remote learning K through 12 (10  days) and any other school gatherings that you have jurisdiction over. We believe that the situation could worsen quickly with the number of possible asymptomatic students and implementing remote learning will be the best preventive measure to place a barrier between anyone actively spreading the virus and those that have not yet been exposed. We will continue to monitor the situation and will be looking closer at your community given the current number of cases. We can be reached at the office should anyone have further questions. Thank you for your vigilance and we will continue to reassess the cases in hopes to get our children back to face to face learning as soon as possible.”

All three buildings will be following the virtual schedule.  KES will start at 8:45 am and here is the schedule:KES Virtual Schedule.

More information will be coming from Mr. Nagaj soon.

KMS/KHS will have office hours beginning at 8:00 am with instruction starting at 9:00 am in the block schedule.  Monday is a blue day.  More information will be communicated out by Mr. Amstutz and Mr. Leone. 6-12 Distance Learning

I deeply apologize for this continued back and forth with our modalities.  I understand this is extremely difficult on work schedules and daily life.  With the information that I became aware of late this afternoon, I felt it necessary to consult with health department.  I will continue to make decisions in consultation with health officials to best ensure the safety of our students, staff and community.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at chad.vanarnhem@kirtlandschools.org.

Take care,

Chad VanArnhem, Superintendent
