Key Communicator

Welcome to the Kirtland Schools’ Key Communicator e-newsletter. We hope to use this tool as a two-way form of communication to share the good news going on in our classrooms, and also provide you with facts in the event of negative situations. We hope you will act as informal communications liaisons with the community and let us know what you’re hearing so we can proactively provide you with the facts of what’s happening in your schools. Thank you for your support!

At the January 31, 2022, Board of Education meeting, John Renwick, the director of technology, was recognized for receiving a $95,000 grant to purchase new student devices.  A huge thanks to Mr. Renwick for his hard work to secure these funds to help the district and our students!

Superintendent Chad VanArnhem presented an update on the KHS Science Lab and stadium progress.  The latest plans and timelines can be found on the website at:

Mr. VanArnhem also highlighted that there are many great things taking place in the classrooms and all extra curricular activities are taking place for our students that include winter sports, drama and the First Tech Challenge. He also gave an overview of a district wellness meeting that took place with students, staff and parents and the new initiatives taking place.

The Board had its second reading to approve a resolution for a renewal operating levy that will be on the ballot on May 3, 2022.  The operating levy was last approved in 2017 and it will NOT be a tax increase to homeowners.  It raises $2,280,000 yearly.

Mr. VanArnhem also shared the updated recommendation to the Board to approve the Return to School Plan: Updated Return to School Plan 1/31/22. The changes are highlighted on the document. Masks will not be mandated but will be optional starting on Tuesday, February 1. On January 26, the Ohio Department of Health issued guidance stating that school districts do not need to conduct contact tracing except in cases where they are asked to assist Local Health Departments with contact tracing, case investigation and exposure notification related to outbreaks or clusters in schools as determined by the LHD.  The COVID-19 Dashboard on the website will continue to be updated. If your child tests positive for COVID-19, please notify the school and complete the Google form ( found on the district website so guidance on timelines can be given. If your child is not feeling well, please continue to keep him or her home.  Per federal law, students will still be required to wear a mask while traveling on the bus
